Summer Watering Tips

June 25, 2018

When it comes to watering your lawn, are you unaware of the proper procedure to make sure it looks great all summer long? There is no one size fits all watering schedule for all homes, but hopefully, some of these tips help you get the right amount of water for your lawn so that your grass receives what it needs without wasting water.

The Basics

A good general rule of thumb for getting the water for watering your lawn is to get about 1 – 1½ inches of water per week. This can come from irrigation or from rainfall, so be sure to be conscious of how much it is raining and how much you’re using your watering system.

However, there are a variety of factors that can affect this amount of water. For example, grass type, soil type, temperature, humidity and lawn age are a few. If you live in a hot, windy, low humidity area with sandy soil, you will have to water a lot more than if you live in a cooler area with higher humidity.

If you’re still unsure on what you can do for your lawn, here are a few more watering tips:

Have the Right System

Make sure that you have the right system for your home. There are many different types of sprinkler systems available today, and each type serves a purpose and works best in different situations. Find out what will make the best fit for your home and make the adjustments if necessary.

Determine the Soil Type

Clay takes a long time to absorb water and retains it well for a long time afterward. This means that you should only water for short periods of time otherwise you will create water runoff, as the clay can’t absorb the water fast enough. With clay, you won’t have to water as often. However, at the opposite extreme, sandy soil absorbs water more quickly but doesn’t retain it well, so you will have to water more frequently.

Watch Your Timing

This tip helps you determine how long and when you should water. If you see puddles or little streams you should shorten the time you are watering. If you notice that the soil seems dry, either, set your sprinkler system to water for a longer period or water more frequently.

Other things to consider about timing include watering just before the sun comes up to minimize evaporation. Also, pay attention to high water use hours in your household, city regulations and avoid those times of the day.
